Oomersi Mawji A container in the form of a Black Francolin Cock, also known as a Black Partridge, standing on a snake. Makers mark O.M. BHUJ Silver Height 14 cm Circa 1870 To view the head of the Francolin, click here The workmanship on this fine model of a Francolin suggests that it was made by Oomersi Mawji himself. The marks are set in well cut "cameo" punches. (See Wilkinson: Indian Silver 1858-1947, page 90, illustration 132.) Images of animals and birds by Mawji are rare. For another example, see the back cover of the catalogue to the exhibition The Silver Lining, held at Indar Pasricha Fine Arts, November 2002, which illustrates a parasol handle in the form of a parrot, which has been ascribed to Oomersi Mawji. |
