On Feb 3 1828 Lord Combermere paid a formal visit to Akbar II in Delhi, where he was received with all honours; given a turban & dress of honour, sword & shield and invested with Persian titles - he was also given a 'tiara' of gold and false stones. This striking portrait is exceptional as it shows an English army officer dressed in the robes and tiara given to him by the Indian Emperor. The hierarchical pose adopted by Lord Combermere shows him as an archetypal Indian hero. His European origins are betrayed in the blue of his eyes and the treatment of his hair. |
